TOUR LENGTH: 351km

MAIN SIGHTS:

  • Balaton wine region
  • Tihany
  • Füle statue park
  • Bence hill lookout
  • Lake Balaton
  • Lake Velence

On the 351-kilometre Balaton Highlands Tour, we start by heading out of the capital towards Velence. We make a detour to the Bence-Hegy Lookout Tower, five kilometres from the town centre, from where we can admire not only the view of Lake Velence, but also the Buda Hills and the Vértes Mountains in the distance.

Our next stop is Székesfehérvár, the seat of Fejér County, and a city boasting some of the richest historical heritage in Hungary. It was a onetime capital of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, as well as serving as the royal seat and coronation city. Its baroque old town has several notable monuments, but it is also a popular destination for its lively sport and cultural activities.

Leaving the town, we get to Nádasdladány, where we can find one of the most beautiful Hungarian castles, built in Tudor style. The unique Nádasdy Mansion has turrets, ornate wrought-iron features and numerous chimneys, and is surrounded by an English park of almost 20 hectares.

Our next stop is at the Füle Statue Park, where the wooded area around the village hides a magical setting with fairies, dragons, witches and elves nestled among the trees, created by woodcarvers.

Going along the northern shore of Lake Balaton, we visit the important wine regions of the Balaton Highlands, passing fabulous little villages such as Kapolcs, Taliándörögd and Vigántpetend, which host the Valley of Arts festival in summer.

We visit Balatonfüred, the capital of the northern lake shore, which owes its popularity not only to its location but also to its vibrant sailing life, its 19th-century villas, its great restaurants and pastry shops and the excellent wines of the area.

Arriving at the Tihany Peninsula, we admire the Benedictine Abbey of Tihany, a gem of Hungarian Baroque architecture founded by King Andrew I. Then we take the ferry to Szántód and continue the tour along the southern shore to Balatonvilágos and the Panorama Lookout. The Aliga high shore is one of the most beautiful points of Lake Balaton, offering a view of the whole lake, the eastern basin and the Bakony Mountains.

Reaching the end of our tour, we ride back past Lake Velence before returning to the capital.

Our Tours run on Thursday, Friday and Sunday (not on Saturday due to the parade).
