The Danube Bend Tour

The Danube Bend Tour

TOUR LENGTH: 161km

MAIN SIGHTS:

  • Csobánka Rocks
  • Castle of Damasd
  • Old city of Szentendre
  • Castle of Visegrád

The first stop on our 207-kilometre Danube Bend tour is Csobánka, with its idyllic surroundings and spectacular rocky hills. Popular tourist destinations are Oszoly Hill and Csúcs Hill; both are easy to climb, but the dazzling white peaks look stunning from the seat of a motorcycle, too!

Next, we ride through the Duna-Ipoly National Park, one of the most biodiverse regions in Hungary. It's worth keeping your eyes peeled as you ride along, as many of its species of flora and fauna are unique to the country.

Arriving in Esztergom, the city’s Basilica – also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Adalbert –is a must-see. It is the largest church of Hungary, stretching 100 metres high from the altar to the dome, and the second tallest building in the country.

Moving on, we cross the Danube on the Mária Valéria Bridge and briefly enter Slovakia, before making our next stop at Nagymaros, from where we take the ferry to Visegrád, the capital of the Danube Bend. Its Citadel is an unmissable attraction, which is well worth a visit even if you don't buy a ticket to the museum. From the top, the whole Danube Bend and the Pilis Mountains lie at your feet. Nearby there is Solomon Tower, which served as the residential tower of the lower castle in the city’s double castle system. Also worth a visit is the Royal Palace, which was a residential house during the reign of Charles Robert and later converted into a palace by King Sigismund.

On the way back to Budapest we make a detour to the Szentendre Open Air Museum, better known as the Skanzen. Over a site of 63 hectares, this museum brings to life the folk architecture, housing, farming and lifestyle of the Hungarian-speaking region. Feeling recharged by the unique atmosphere of this picturesque heritage town, we ride back to the capital.
